Worship Focus: The Christian life is sometimes described as “following Jesus.” Today’s Scripture readings helps us see what exactly it means to follow Jesus. We follow him faithfully, we follow him even through difficulties, thankfully serving him and working for him. May the Holy Spirit keep us faithful followers of Jesus throughout this life and into eternal life!

Worship Focus: It is the believer’s pursuit and passion to abstain from sin, share forgiveness, and serve our neighbor. It is a privilege to live such a life as Christians, but we are weak. Today we pray that God would make us ready to do with a cheerful and willing heart that which pleases him and blesses us.

Worship Focus:  We say, “you can’t take it with you,” but we still spend a great deal of our time and energy dealing with money and earthly possessions. Jesus told his disciples that it was more difficult for a rich man to get into the kingdom than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. Jesus’  parable of the rich man and Lazarus shows us that God’s kingdom and the Word of God that leads us into that kingdom are greater treasures than money and riches. May we make the Scriptures and the kingdom of God the first things in our lives.

Worship Focus:  A significant aspect of our Chrisitan lives is stewardship. Stewardship is simply managing the unique blessings that God gives each of us in this life. Today’s service encourages us to be faithful stewards of the the treasures that God has entrusted to us. With thanksgiving in our hearts for the many physical and spiritual blessings God has showered on us, Christians gladly give back to the Lord who has given us everything we need for this life and who has done everything to secure our eternal life with him. May Jesus bless us and give us the courage, strength and insight to work hard at being good stewards of our physical blessings.

Worship Focus:  “Jesus sinners does receive!” This repeating phrase from today’s Hymn of the Day summarizes the common thought in today’s Scripture readings. Jesus does not seek the self-righteous person who trusts in his or her own good works. Jesus came to seek and save the lost, to rescue repentant sinners from the guilt of their sin and to comfort them with his limitless grace won for them by his death on the cross. Those who are weighed down by guilt can rejoice that “Jesus sinners does receive!”

Worship Focus: Christ calls for complete commitment from his disciples. Through Jesus’ teaching in today’s Gospel account and through concrete examples in the First and Second Lesson in today’s service, we see that the commitment to be Jesus’ disciples call us to place him first and foremost in our lives, above anyone and anything else. May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to faithfully take up our cross and follow Jesus in our lives!

Worship Focus:  Four weeks of “warnings” in worship begin today. The Christian’s life of faith will be marked by difficulties. These warnings are given so that the believer will be prepared to meet these challenges with the confidence of the cross. Today we see that the Word of God doesn’t always unite—it also divides. The living and active Word of God does not bring peace between believers and unbelievers, but division.
