Childrens Christmas Service
Sunday Dec 18, 2016
Sunday Dec 18, 2016
Our children now have done their best
To learn their parts, so you’ll be blessed.
They come with words and songs learned well,
That you, in turn, the tale may tell;
Of God’s own Son, who’s come to earth.
Of Jesus Christ’s most holy birth.
Our medium of message this day
Is one that very well just may
Cause you to say a thing or two—
Like, “This is surely something new!”
A Christmas cantata, the program says,
A few of the features this service has
Are unbroken streams of words in song,
And catchy new phrases of things that long
Ago we heard at Christmases before.
But this time the worship has something more.
With a minimum of tedium
And maximum of meaning,
This cantata is a medium
From which we will be gleaning
New insights on the Savior’s birth,
On what believers sensed and said;
New thoughts on that pious, holy mirth
That Luther says the angels had.
“This Is a Time of Revelation”,
(That’s a song they will be singing)
And we receive the meditation
The children will be bringing.
With quality of melody,
And melody of rhyme,
Our children sing “The Birth of Jesus”,
For you–it’s Christmas time.

Welcome to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church & School!
In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today. We pray that your soul will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness to us through his Son, Jesus Christ.
Worship Focus: As we prepare our hearts to celebrate Jesus’ birth, we humbly confess the reason why Jesus was born: to rescue us from the consequences of our own sin. John the Baptist’s call to repentance prior to the beginning of Jesus’ ministry serves as a fitting call to repentance for us as we prepare to celebrate his first entrance into our world. John’s 2,000-year old call to repentance echoes in worship today, calling us to turn from sin and turn to the Savior who came to battle and defeat sin on our behalf. Serving at Worship

Worship Focus: Today we enter a new church year with Advent season. Advent means “coming.” It’s Christ who is coming: coming in Bethlehem on the first Christmas, coming again at the end of time on Judgment Day, and coming now in Word and Sacrament. This morning we emphasize the second coming of Jesus on Judgment Day. We look to God’s Word for guidance and strength as we anticipate Jesus’Serving at Worship

In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today. We pray that your soul will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness to us through his Son, Jesus Christ.
Worship Focus: This morning we wrap up the church year with a celebration of Christ our King. Every church year reviews the life and work of Jesus Christ for us—from his birth to his life, death, resurrection, ascension, and promise to return at the end of time. As we stand on the threshold of another church year, we celebrate our King’s power, rule and authority over all things for our eternal good. May God bless our festival celebration of Christ the King. Worship Focus: The second-to-last Sunday of the church year brings to mind our eternal future in heaven. The trials and troubles of this life are only temporary. Through faith in Jesus’ saving work, Christians look forward to the resurrection on the Last Day, which will usher in the blessings of eternal life in heaven that our Savior secured for us by his resurrection from the dead. In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today. We pray that your soul will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness to us through his Son, Jesus Christ.
Focus of Today’s Service: The church on earth is called the “church militant” for good reason. On this side of eternity, the church must always struggle and fight to maintain correct, biblical teaching in a world which often rejects our message. As we remember the Lutheran Reformation of the Church today, may God keep us faithful to his Word just as our Lutheran forefathers were!

Worship Focus: The readings for today give Christians a clear directive to persist in prayer, never growing weary of asking God for what we need, remembering that the Word guides us in determining our needs and knowing that God will respond out of love in our best interest. In doing so we persist in our faith, preaching and proclaiming the Word at all times by our Christian example. This is a challenging task which we can accomplish only through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Like Jacob in the Old Testament lesson, we are bold to say to our Lord, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
