Transfiguration of Our Lord
February 26, 2017
In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today. We pray that your soul will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness to us through his Son, Jesus Christ.
Worship Focus: The Epiphany season concludes each year by observing Jesus’ transfiguration. In this unique event from Jesus’ life, he revealed his divine glory to three of his closest disciples just before he began the final part of his journey to the cross. As we stand on the doorstep of the season of Lent, when we follow Jesus’ journey to the cross, it is only appropriate for us to remember his transfiguration today. This final glimpse of Jesus’ glory reminds us that though we will see Jesus’ stark humility during weeks ahead, he is still the divine and all-powerful Son of God.

Worship Focus: Who is a better preacher than Jesus? This morning the Savior’s Sermon on the Mount continues with a jolting message: Love your enemies! What could be more counterintuitive? Yet Christ calls his disciples to a love for our neighbor that models itself after Jesus’ love for the world. A heart like Christ’s has no room for vengeance, but is filled with love for all. Do any of us have such a heart? Jesus came to heal our hearts and to give us a heart as perfect as that of his heavenly Father.

Worship Focus: In John 15 Jesus calls us, “friends.” On the surface that statement is nice. Beneath the surface that statement is necessary. God’s Word tells us, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Without a relationship with Jesus we would be eternally lost, hopelessly condemned enemies of God. Yet, Jesus calls us friends and rightly so. Jesus died on a cross to pay for every time our thoughts, words and actions have offended our God, hurt people in our lives and ruined our relationship with both God and our friends. Today we celebrate the love Jesus has for us—the love he put into action so he could call us friends now and forever in heaven.

Worship Focus: The Gospels of the Epiphany Season continue to show us who the Babe of Bethlehem is. Last Sunday the Beatitudes, the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount was the Gospel. Today’s Gospel is another portion of Jesus’ great sermon to his disciples. “You are the salt of the earth…you are the light of the world,” Jesus said. Salt and light make the world a better place. Jesus’ love for us and our sharing and living his love in this world make this world a better place.

Focus of Today’s Service: We continue in the Sundays after the Epiphany to unwrap the gift of the Messiah the Lord gave us in Jesus. Today we see him preaching. The Gospel is the Beatitudes, the opening words of the Savior’s Sermon on the Mount. Jesus calls his disciples to reject the values of the world. He says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit…those who mourn…the meek…those who hunger and thirst…those who are persecuted.” Today’s Psalm, Psalm 1, reflects on the blessedness of believers as Jesus did in the Beatitudes.

Worship Focus: How does one live in the light? A simple answer would be to light a candle, flip the switch or fire up your iTorch Flashlight. Isaiah shares a more complex and spiritually beneficial answer. When Isaiah says in today’s Old Testament lesson that the people who lived in darkness have seen a great light, he was looking prophetically toward the arrival of Jesus in Galilee where people would begin to see an amazing display of God’s divine Light, Light that reveals God’s great love for them.

Worship Focus: Today we look and see; we find and we celebrate. When John points to Jesus as the Lamb of God, the Lord is accomplishing his Epiphany purpose—revealing his Son as the fulfillment of the Passover Lamb, whose sacrifice saves us from death. Our Epiphany task is to tell others “We have found the Messiah!” and bring them to Jesus. May our response be modeled for us by Andrew, who enthusiastically invited his brother Peter to come and meet the Savior, and be worked in us by the powerful working of the Holy Spirit.

Welcome to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church & School!
In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today. We pray that your soul will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness to us through his Son, Jesus Christ.
Worship Focus: The theme for the Epiphany season is the manifesting, or revealing, of Jesus as Messiah and Savior. He was first known publicly at his baptism, which is the theme for today. God openly declared Jesus to be his Son then, and reminds us that he makes us his children in our baptism. Jesus was an obedient Son, following his Father’s will and achieving salvation for the people of all nations. We are called in our baptism to obediently serve the same Lord and share the good news of salvation with the people of all nations.

Worship Focus: The birth of Jesus was the first step in God's eternal plan to rescue his fallen creation from sin. Though the sinful world and sinful people try to stand against God's will and Word, nothing could stand in the way of God's plan of salvation. Worship on the Sunday after Christmas reveals and reviews God's unstoppable plan for our salvation through the birth of his Son, Jesus Christ.
