Worship Focus:  In 1530 the Lutheran princes presented the Augsburg confession to Emperor Charles V. The Augsburg confession presented the teaching of the Bible in the face of many errors that had crept into the Roman Church throughout the Middle Ages. The Lutherans especially wanted to emphasize the Bible's teaching that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, and that Scripture alone is the sole authority for all doctrine and practice in the church.
This year we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Lutheran Reformation. In 1517 Dr. Martin Luther posted 95 Theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany, thus igniting the Reformation across Europe. The presentation of the Augsburg confession on June 25, 1530, represents another special milestone in the history of the Reformation of the Christian church.

Worship Focus: Pentecost Day marks the birthday of the Holy Christian Church. After his ascension into heaven, Jesus fulfilled his promise by sending the Holy Spirit on his disciples in a miraculous way to hasten the spread of the gospel. Today we commemorate this important even that took place 50 days after Jesus’ resurrection, and we celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit in the Church and in our own lives.

Worship Focus:  On this past Thursday, we celebrated Jesus’ ascension into heaven. Today we review his Ascension and we remember what the Bible says about Jesus as our high priest, a description of Jesus’ work now as our ascended Savior who intercedes for us before his Father’s throne in heaven.

Worship Focus:  The love of God who lives in us leads to a life of obedience. Jesus’ promise of another Counselor is a loaded one: the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to do what Jesus asks. This Sunday’s lessons teach that love for our risen Lord means obedience to his commands. Only Jesus’ promises make that possible. The Prayer of the Day sets the tone: “Put your Spirit in us to think those things that are true and long for those things that are good…”

Worship Focus:  As we move further from Easter Sunday and closer to Ascension Day, our attention turns to Jesus’ words to his disciples in John 13-17, preparing them for his physical departure from them after his resurrection. The words of Jesus that we will hear today emphasize that faith in the risen and ascended Jesus is the only way human beings can approach God now and dwell with him eternally.

Fourth Sunday of Easter

Worship Focus: The fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday. In chapter ten of John’s Gospel, the Good Shepherd chapter of the Bible, Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. … The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. … I give [my sheep] eternal life.” With these words, Jesus links the metaphor of him as our good shepherd with his resurrection and our future resurrection. Today’s service explores this metaphor in light of the Easter resurrection gospel.
