Welcome to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church & School In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today. We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness to us through Jesus.
Worship Focus:
NO WAY! That cannot be true. Why can’t it be true? We are talking about God’s forgiveness full and free thanks to His grace clearly shown through Jesus who died for our sins and rose again. Forgiveness cannot, nor does it need to be earned. Period! It is possible because God is behind this truth. Believe, and be saved. Believe, and chill with the guilt. Believe, and out of love keep God’s will for us.

Worship Focus: “Christ” (from the Greek) and “Messiah” (from the Hebrew) both mean “the Anointed One.” Anointing somethingin Old Testament times meant pouring oil over it to signifiy that it’s been set apart and designated for a special purpose. What a perfect title for our Savior! He was indeed set apart for a special purpose: to be the perfect Savior the world needed. You can understand why the people in the Old Testament looked so earnestly for this One. Today we celebrate when the revealed Anointed One was anointed with the Holy Spirit and empowered to fulfill the mission for which he was set apart—all for our sake.

Focus of Today’s Service: The power goes out and the sun is going down. You go for the flashlight expecting what to happen? But it does not work due to dead batteries? Did you remember to pick up new batteries when last at the store? It is good to keep the flashlight in working order at all times. More importantly it is good to keep our soul in working order at all times. The way for this to happen is by remaining connected to Jesus who is Light and powers us to be light in a world which can use it just as we need His light. Where can you shine His light this week as you yourself today are recharged in His light?

Worship Focus:
Was it the best year ever? Or was it the opposite due to health or job or the loss of a loved one? Through the good and the not good there is at least one constantin this life. Our Bible Readings for this Worship Service of Reflection and Renewal point to what that constant is in life. The Lord refresh you through His Word by keeping you focused on the Christ, our Light and our Salvation.

Worship Focus: God cares for his children. He makes that very clear throughout his Scriptures. Yet we can still doubt it or spurn his care for us, not just physically but spiritually. So how does God respond to that? By—(shocker!)—caring for us! He loves us like a father because he is our father. He has made us his children even after we strayed from him. Just as he cared for the Son of God incarnate he cares for us. Today let us remember, honor, and praise God for his care for us, his children!

Worship Focus: What puts the ‘merry’ in ‘Merry Christmas’? Presents are nice to receive, and to give out. Family gatherings are special times. It is more than such, isn’t it? What makes Christmas a time to be merry is the message associated with CHRISTmas. Jesus came to earth as promised. He has won our needed peace with God. The peace we have been given and are to share with others makes this a merry time of year, a feeling that can carry on throughout the year. We gather today to hear such good news yet again, and to show our thanks. Merry Christmas!

Worship Focus: Because of sin, guilt, and death, everything seemed eternally hopeless. Then God sent Jesus. As promised and prophesied, God sent our only hope of eternal life with him. This child born for us would win the forgiveness we all need. Let us celebrate the birth of God made flesh, Immanuel, the Prince of Peace—the world’s Savior. Hope is born!

Worship Focus: Do you consider yourself more ‘sinner’ or ‘saint’? Does it depend on the day? We are both, sinner and saint. By the grace of God we can be called ‘saints’ while living in flesh, this through the cleansing blood of Jesus; this is why Jesus came to earth in the flesh, starting as a baby. And so, Christmas has meaning, Christmas is filled with promise, Christmas is filled with peace. Give thanks today and every day for you can be called a ‘saint.’ Live today in light of this truth and keep sin behind you. Rejoice, God is with you.

Prayer: Gracious Lord God, as travelers in this sinful world, the search for peace seems like an impossible dream. We see unrest all around, in our country, in our schools and workplaces, and in our homes. Our minds are often filled with restless thoughts that rob our joy and happiness. Today our children present a message filled with your blessing of peace; peace that came to earth long ago in the Bethlehem manger. This was not an earthly peace, which is only fleeting, but heavenly peace that sets our hearts at rest. Send your Holy Spirit into our hearts and show us the true peace between you,our perfect God,and our sin-filled souls. Teach us to treasure the peace that is ours through the sacrifice of Jesus, our Savior, who is the Prince of Peace, and in whose name we pray. Amen.
