The Service of Darkness Friday
Saturday Apr 11, 2020
Saturday Apr 11, 2020
ONE DAY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING: GOOD FRIDAY
On Good Friday, the Christian Church remembers the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus. Although our remembrance is solemn, it is not a message of gloom. It is a message of adoration toward Jesus, the Lamb of God. On this day almost 2,000 years ago, Jesus offered up his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world. The Service of Darkness—often called Tenebrae(Latin for “darkness”)—guides us to reflect deeply on Jesus’ sufferings for our sake as well as the great cost of our forgiveness. In the chancel burns a seven-fold candelabrum in the shape of a crown of thorns. The candles will be extinguished as the service progresses. At the end of the service, the final candle is removed from the chancel, leaving the sanctuary in tenebrae for silent prayer. The service is closed by a loud sound, called the strepitus(Latin for “crash” or “loud noise”). The strepitushas been interpreted by worshippers in a number of ways. Some see it as a symbol to remind us of the stone that was rolled in front of Jesus’ tomb to shut it; others see it as a statement of the cataclysmic nature of Christ’s sacrifice; still others view it as foreshadowing the rending of Christ’s tomb at his resurrection on Easter morning. The final candle, which is still burning, is returned to its place at the end of the service before the congregation departs the church, leaving a symbolic glimmer of gospel hope pointing forward to Easter morning amidst the darkness that necessitated Good Friday.

Maundy Thursday – New Command
April 9, 2020
Worship Focus: In the Gospel of John, chapter 20, we are told, “But these are written that you may
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
It is because of this truth we are gathered here once again to hear how Jesus Christ has made such a
life possible. It was not an easy feat. The way to our having a life that goes beyond the day to day
routines of this life and which holds certainty beyond this life came at a great price. Jesus had to die,
or we were going to end up dead. This is important because there is a death beyond the physical. The
death Jesus enables us to be free from meant he had to go to war. During this time of Lent we will be
looking at, from various vantage points, this war he entered so we could have life in his name. The
Lord deepen your appreciation for this life you have been given as you hear for the first time or the
how many times the length Jesus was willing to go with you in mind. THE SON OF GOD GOES
FORTH TO WAR.
The word ‘Maundy” is of Latin origin. It has to do with the mandate Jesus gave His disciples (see John 13:34). He who is love wants us to love one another.

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church & School
As the members of St. Mark’s, we say with the Psalmist:
“I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the LORD’" (Psalm 122:1).
Even during this time of not being able to gather together at our house of worship, we still
rejoice in the opportunity to worship with our fellow believers through our online capabilities.
To those who are not members of our congregation and joining us today
– Welcome to our worship service! -
May the Lord continue to help us grow in His grace and knowledge as we hear, speak, and sing His holy Word.
THE ORDER OF WORSHIP
Focus of Today’s Service: When is the last time you let out a loud shout over something positive?
Believers are encouraged to shout out words and songs of rejoicing as we contemplate yet again the lengths
Jesus was willing to go in order to secure our salvation. We do such not to bring attention to ourselves
but rather to Him who is worthy of praise. Under all circumstances we have reason to shout aloud to our God.
May God continue to renew your confidence in Him as you hear and sing His Word.

Worship Focus:
The God of life reigns over death. But what happens when our faith in that is tested? How are we to face the threat of physical death, spiritual death, and even eternal death? By remembering that...our God reigns over death! That’s true now as we live spiritually for him, and that will be true on the Last Day when all the dead are raised. So today let us praise God not only for the fact that he has authority over death but also that he uses that authority to give us life now and forevermore.

Worship Focus:
Humility. Do you consider yourself to be a humble person? Does humility equal being downcast? When you think of humility, is there a person who comes to mind as a great example of being humble? Jesus walked this earth with great humility though He had every reason to walk around arrogant. In His humility He did a very unselfish act for all humankind. It is this humility and this act we continue to celebrate today. God keep us humble while also remaining confident in this life in light of the next. Let us worship Him!

Worship Focus:
The coming of Christ as the Light of the World is a gospel truth we often celebrate. But what we can fail to remember is that Jesus didn’t just come to bring sight to the spiritually blind but also judgment to the blinded who reject himin unbelief. So this morning we rejoice not just in the light of God’s grace but also in his justice upon the darkness of evil. Therefore we also spur each other on to live in the light of faith God has given us and to turn from the darkness the world offers.
