GLORIFY HIM ... GROW IN HIM ... GO WITH HIS GOSPEL
13th Sunday after Pentecost
August 22, 2021
A place to call home: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church & School
In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today.
We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness through Jesus.
Worship Focus:
Would you consider yourself to be a smart person, a person who makes good
decisions, a person who can recognize foolishness or danger? One can be the smartest person in the
world but not have Jesus in their heart, that is not smart. Jesus points out what is smart and how to
get smart where it matters most, and why this is the case. Thank God for the ‘smarts’ He gives us,
along with ways to show we are smart.

Worship Focus:
When you are healthy and there is no common sense reason for you to be on a
liquid only diet, would you do it? Is that how we at times view our connection with God, there is no
reason for us not to be growing up in Him and yet we remain on a liquid diet or not even that?
Today we are here to get more than the liquid of God; we are here to receive the solid food He
provides through the Gospel in Word and Sacrament. Celebrate this opportunity, and other
opportunities like this one which enable us to grow up in our life with God.

Worship Focus:
Our bodies need food and water to exist. Not all foods, just as not all liquids, are
equal when it comes to providing our body with what it needs. Our soul needs nourishment; but not
all forms of nourishment available for the soul are what we need or good for us. Jesus has what we
need. He provides for both our body and our soul. Jesus tells us that when connected to Him we will
not go hungry or be thirsty where it matters most, and that is our soul. Take in and celebrate the
sustenance He provides.

Would you consider yourself to be a generous person (not just financially)? Do
words of kindess and encouragement flow ceaselessly out of your mouth even when such are not
directed your way? What is to prompt our generosity is not how others treat us but keeping in mind
what God gives to us … and without ceasing. His love is generous. In light of His generous love, He
calls and equips us to be generous … not just with words, but also with actions. God help us be the

Who has been influential in your life, when it comes to your faith? God not only calls us to faith, not only calls us
to be faithful to His Word, Heal so calls and equips us to be leaders with this faith. Leadership does not have to
come with a title or a corner office, it includes being a positive influence on those around you. This toois what
faithfulness to His Word looks like. God bear fruit with those you seek to influence.

Worship Focus:
How health conscience are you? Do you carefully watch what you eat, that is, put into your body? Do you exercise
with the goal of good health? Does your soul get the same treatment, or even better than what your body gets?
Neglect of the body, and of our soul, comes with consequences as we reap what we sow. Eventually the body will
wear out regardless, yet we are to be good managers of our physical health; all the more reason to make sure we
get and remain spiritually healthy. We do this by treasuring, that is, being faithful withthe One Thing Needful.
God be praised for this opportunity before us today.

Worship Focus: Have you longed for a glass of milk only to start drinking it and it tasted sour? Sour milk has its purposes,
though not easy to drink. At times the Word of God may seem sour to us and to people we know; it has its purposes for
coming across that way. At the same time the Word of God has sweet words to say to us. God help us appreciate the ‘sour’ and
the ‘sweet’ of His Word, His Word is TRUTH, the truth we need. Blessings be evident with the drinking up of that truth today.

If someone tried to take away what is important to you, what would you do? Is the Word of God important to you?

Who do you love? Why do you love them? Is it a conditional love? How long will
this love last? Who loves you? God does! His love for you is not conditional, and it lasts beyond this
life. Because God is love, and because He loves us, we are able to love not only Him but also others
even when they are not loveable (that does not mean we excuse the bad behavior). Today we get
another glimpse of God’s love, what that means for us as well ashow to put it into practice ... as He
does. Bask in His love for you!

If there is a drought, what are the impacts on us … on plants, etc? As we know a
drought is not a good thing, and then add multiple years of drought; so a spiritual drought is not
good for us, in fact it too can be deadly. Thankfully God has given us a way to avoid such a drought.
But do we take advantage of it for maximum growth? God keep us connected to His Word so we
can avoid a drought in our heart. Let us glorify Him once again today, and grow up in Him; and then
let us go with His life-giving/sustaining Word.
