Focus for our Midweek Gatherings ---
Jesus Fills The Potholes
A place to call home:
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church & School
In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, welcome home. We especially welcome to our house of worship our guests who have joined us today.
We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness to us through Jesus. We say with the
Psalmist, whether here on campus or viewing online, “I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the
LORD’”(Psalm 122:1). May the Lord continue to help us grow in His grace and knowledge as we hear, speak, and sing His holy Word.
Worship Focus:
Jesus fills the potholes? Say what? Life is full of potholes, just like our roads. Jesus
has an eternal remedy for the potholes of life. The remedy has roots in Christmas, and the full
benefits of this remedy will be known when Jesus comes again at the end of the ages. We cannot
have heaven without the 'reason' for Christmas. Due to a variety of reasons, Christmas can be a
depressing time for people while for others it is a time of happiness and celebration; Jesus gets that.
This is why the Season of Advent is an important time of the year in our church. The Advent Season
connects Christmas and the End of the Ages as we hear again what Jesus has accomplished for us
and has waiting for us.
FOCUS ON THE SCRIPTURES Based on Hebrews 4:14-16
“Jesus Fills The Potholes … By Giving Us Grace”
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of
God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable
to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as
we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that
we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Presiding Minister: Pastor Jonathan Kolander
Accompanist: Rosemarie Boushek
Vocalists: Jenny Kolander, Hannah Ripley, Lisa Thiesfeldt

Worship Focus: Do you have those moments when something begins to make sense and it brings a
smile to your face? The church Season of Advent can be like that, providing multiple moments
which can help make sense of this life and why it is a smart move to prepare for life after this one.
God gives us what we need to prepare and be prepared. It is in our best interest to not ignore the
Advent moments He puts before us today. May the enlightenment He gives put a smile on your face.

Worship Focus: Identity matters, yours can open up ‘doors’ others cannot. People are trying to steal
your identity. It is not just your earthly identity at risk, your identity in Jesus is also under attack.
What are you doing to protect it? Jesus has revealed His identity to us and by grace we get to share in
His identity. Today we hear about what that means for us day to day, and beyond.

We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness through Jesus.
Worship Focus: When you purchase a book, do you put your name in it? If so, why do you do
that? The same reason can apply to marking our name on electronics, and the like. God wants to put
His name on you and write your name in His Book of Life. How does He do that? What is the
purpose of this? He knows already the names to be found in the Book of Life. Do you give proof
that your name is included in it? Such is a daunting thought, and at the same time it is meant to be an
encouragement. This is something to focus on during worship, and beyond this hour.

Worship Focus: Have you asked this question, or something similar, about this life: Is this all there
is to life? This is not to say this life is horrible, yet there are times when the ugliness of this life stands
out and can get to us. Jesus reminds us to hold on and to not lose heart, nor to get distracted by this
life. Keep looking ahead, He says; a time is coming when the ugliness and distractions of this life will
come to an end. It is for that time we need to remain alert and ready. Are you?

Celebration of the Reformation - October 31, 2021
Worship Focus: How often do you contemplate the fact of your salvation through faith in Jesus? It
was no small matter what Jesus has accomplished for us, and for all. How easily this Truth can be
lost or dismissed. Praise the Lord for Reformers in His church throughout history, people He used
to keep the Gospel front and center. And the Lord continues to do this through people like you; this
is no small task given to us. Thankfully He has equipped us … through faith … by giving us the
Scriptures for our constant learning … and sharing. God help us to not take any of this associated
with the Reformation for granted. Let us worship Him!

Worship Focus: What would your life be like without the good news of the Gospel? What about the
Gospel message in particular has special meaning to you? How long will the Gospel be around? How
are we to show that we believe the Gospel, that it makes a difference in our life? A celebration of the
Reformation which took place in the 1500s is valuable as it still leads us to think about what life
could be like if the Gospel had been lost then, and if now? What are you able to do to make sure that
does not happen? God be praised for what He does to make sure that does not happen.
