The Ascension of our Lord
May 29, 2022
A place to call home: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church & School
In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today.
We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness through Jesus.
Worship Focus: Do you like to be held accountable? Our sinful nature rebels at the concept, yet our
new self in Jesus welcomes it. Who of us does not need accountability, no matter our situation? Our
motive to live a God-directed lifestyle is not because we fear punishment but rather because the love
of Christ compels us to see His way is best for us. When we mess up, thankfully Jesus intercedes for
us as He wants to see us in heaven with Him. Give thanks, then, for God holding us accountable in
various ways, through various people, so that we will not have to fear the day of accountability.
Presiding Minister: Pastor Jonathan Kolander
Musical Accompanists: Marty Puckett
Violin/Cello: Vince Beiderbecke
Percussion: Don Black
Altar Flowers: The flowers have been provided by Ellie & Steve Ennis in celebration of Steve’s
birthday and in honor and memory of all those who have served in our armed services!

Worship Focus: Have you thought about walking through this life with shrink wrap around your
body? There are so many things in this life that can harm our body (inside and out), how do we stay
safe? God has given us a brain, common sense, and most importantly His Word (the Bible). There
He reminds us that our ultimate protection through this life comes from Him. Though we go
through troubles on earth, such do not nullify the love and power of God. This truth is what we
build on during this hour of worship.

A prayer:
Teach us, Lord of heaven and earth, to number our days aright. Hear our prayers and open our ears to the

We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness through Jesus.
Worship Focus: The word ‘love’ is so overused, isn’t it? People have the word ‘love’ pass through
their lips (‘I love you’ or ‘you are loved’), but how many really mean it? A way to show you mean
what you say is through action. God tells us that He loves us, and He backed it up with action. How
can you back up the word ‘love’ with action? Couldn’t our world use more of your legit love, a love
which comes from God through you? As we worship today, think of God’s love for you both in
word and action.

We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness through Jesus.
Worship Focus: How often do you think about what heaven will be like? Do you think it will be
boring in heaven? Do you think your family and friends will be there, sitting around a table? If you
are not thinking about life in heaven, what if you started to do so; how would that change your view
on life? … on eternity? God has given us words so we can draw pictures in our minds about life in
heaven. While not having all the answers, there is plenty in the Bible to contemplate. Such time spent
in the Word will not be a waste of your time.

We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness through Jesus.
Worship Focus: Why you? Why would God have an interest in you? You are His creation, as He is
the Author of all life. He has redeemed you through the sacrifice of His Son. He cares about your
body and your soul. Even though ‘we’ may not have an interest in God, He does in ‘us.’ As we think
about people who have no interest in God, maybe through you that will change; and so, we do and
support Gospel sharing efforts with that goal in mind. God be praised for His patience and His
caring about people, like you.

Worship Focus: Have you ever accused God of being a liar? We might be tempted to when His
plans for us do not seem to line up with the plans we have set for ourselves. God has only our good
in mind, eternal good above all. And so, when our plans do not seem to line up, who needs to adjust?
At the heart of God’s solid promises is the news concerning the resurrection of Jesus. If God has
does this for you, what else can and does He do for you which you can count on? Something to
reflect on during this hour of worship.

Worship Focus: Have you thought about what heaven will be like? What have you come up with?
The Bible gives us glimpses of what heaven will be like for us who confess Jesus as Lord. While we
don’t have all the answers we might like to have, we have enough to know our hope for heaven is a
good thing. Heaven is not just a pipe dream, a checking out of reality; it is reality, and thank God it is
for without it we would be hard pressed to get through this life. Celebrate, then: Jesus lives. A place
in heaven has been secured through Jesus. How do you plan to live your life now with this news
firmly in your heart?
