GLORIFY HIM ... GROW IN HIM ... GO WITH HIS GOSPEL
CELEBRATING THE GOODNESS OF GOD
2nd Sunday in Lent
March 5, 2023
A place to call home: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church & School
In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today.
We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness through Jesus.
Worship Focus: No one loves you, at least that is what some people tell themselves (Satan likes to
tell us that too). Yet, somebody does love you, and very much so. That ‘somebody’ is God. He went
to great lengths to demonstrate His love for you, and every one else. We who know God’s love are to
share His love with others and in this way they can come to know the love of God. Today we have
another opportunity to express our thanks for His love in our life.

What is holding you back from living free in Jesus? If you are caught up in the thought process of not feeling saved or worthy, reread John 3:16 and the events of Holy Week;
focus on the facts which reveal God’s love for you, such is not based on how you feel but on how He is toward us. Maybe it is guilt which is holding you back; Jesus has made it possible for you to be set free from this too. As we ponder the opening question this Lenten journey, may the Lord continue to open your eyes and ears and heart to what He has done to set us free from ourselves (our sin and all that comes with it) and thus enabled to live the life He calls us to live – living free in Jesus.

Worship Focus: How could this happen? Why did this happen? I am a good person and this still
happened to me, what is the point of trying to live a good life? Any of that sound familiar from your
own lips? We would like a world without sin, but that is not the reality. However, sin does not have
to be king, so to speak. Why not? The Bible Readings for today provide answers we need, and with
those answers comes inner peace and hope and power to keep going. Cynicism does not have to rule
the day, Jesus in our hearts can and does. So, here we are … worship Him.

Worship Focus: What has been a life changing experience for you? Perhaps it is health related, or
due to a job change. Getting married, starting a family, moving to a different State … How did you
handle it? Jesus offers us a life changing experience. We see the various aspects of what this looks
like each time we are contemplating and digesting His holy Word. Today is no different. God help us
work through what we can change and what we cannot, while praising His name with each ‘step’ we

Worship Focus: What do you mean there will be consequences? Can’t we just do what we want, as
long as I feel good about myself and what I accomplish? What would our society be like if there were
no consequences for wrong / harmful actions? We are getting a taste of this, and it is not good. God
has put us in a position to not just live for ourself, but to live for Him and with those around us in
mind. God move our heart to get this, as what is in our heart becomes evident through our actions.
Let this be our prayer during this hour of worship so we can put such into practice during the week.

Christians we are not to just blend into the ways of the world, rather we are to set the example on
how to live life. This is a humble calling. So how do we balance being in the world while not being of
the world? Thankfully God helps us with this as well.

makes that possible? ‘Good’ is to be defined by God; and at the heart of His definition for being a
